Dinagyang 2012 Results, winners and more

Congratulations to the Dinagyang 2012 Festival winners led by the defending champion Tribu Pan-ay from Fort San Pedro National High School. The tribe under the helm of multi awarded choreographer and artist Rommel Flogen gave an outstanding performance that WOWED the audience which ever stage they performed. It was even grander than their winner performance last year. They are also the defending Aliwan Fiesta champion and with that breathtaking performance and awesome production it could spell another Aliwan Fiesta crown this coming April or May at the Aliwan FiestA in Manila.

Salakayan Festival of Miag-ao, Iloilo emerged as the Champion in the Kasadyahan Regional Festival. It was a first for the kasadyahan to feature festivals from all over the region as contingents in the cultural presentation.

For the record, there are 75 activities for Dinagyang 2012. The number is coincidental as 2012 is the Diamond Jubilee Year for Iloilo City Charter. Starting with the launch on the date with a neat combination of 11-11-11 on November 11, 2011, up to the thanksgiving mass on January 23, 2012, the events for Iloilo’s arch-fiesta are a mix of culture and commerce, religious and secular, avant-garde and traditional.

The activities include parades, beauty pageants, exhibits, sports, visuals, music, culinary, talent, public service, trade, film, fashion, costume, carnival rides, and many more expected to bolster the objectives of the 2012 Iloilo Dinagyang Festival and live up to Iloilo City’s claim as the Festival Capital of the Philippines.

The major highlights pursue the noble objective of promoting local culture and religiosity. The Ati Contest is a showcase of the best folk choreography based on the way of life of the aborigines. The Kasadyahan is a cultural exchange which has evolved to a wider participation of the major festivals in Western Visayas. The Fluvial Procession evokes the devotion to Senor Santo Nino. Together they create a sense of pride for the place and her people.

The celebration is a major player in tourism awareness program showcasing the City’s attractions. The parades and the other events bring the visitors around the metropolis and enable them to take a look at her rich history through the natural landscapes and heritage structures.

There are six big parades in the schedule of activities. Pamukaw was held last December 16, from Bonifacio Drive to the Freedom Grandstand where the 13 tribes had their first public appearance. The Opening Salvo on January 13 will again feature these groups in a parade route which shall take them through the four performance areas for a dry run of the Sunday finale.

The parades for the Opening Salvo, Kasadyahan, and Ati Competitions will start from Plaza Libertad in front of the San Jose Parish Church, the religious host to Dinagyang. The first judging will be at the Freedom Grandstand. The second will be in front of the Provincial Capitol, third will be at the crossing between Huervana Street and Luna Street, and the last at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

Along the way, the parade will pass through the old Calle Real and the Central Business District where architectural edifices speak of the old glory of the then Queen City of the South. It will cross the Iloilo River upon Forbes Bridge which connects La Paz district to the City Proper. It will go by the Lopez boat house, the St. Clement’s Redemptorist Church, the Baptist Church, and the Bola-bola landmark fronting the Gabaldon building of Iloilo (National) High School, the first secondary school established by the Americans outside of Manila. It will end at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

The Tambor Trumpa Martsa Musika (drum and bugle contest) will take the route similar to Pamukaw. Sponsors Mardi Gras will also start at the Freedom Grandstand and retrace the old carousel path which will end at the corner of Quezon and Delgado streets. For groups joining the Religious Sadsad, they may continue parading up to the front of the San Jose Parish Church.

In sports, there are seven events: 9-Ball billiard, golf, marathon, swimming, badminton, shooting and arnis tournaments. Three fashion shows are in the offing: Homecoming Fashion Show, Beauty and Fashion Extraordinaire, and Ka-Tribu Indigenous Fashion.

The Special Events of the 2012 Dinagyang are Dressing-up Dagoy, Luces in the Sky

Malls have their own special events. SM City Iloilo has the Dinagyang Carnival Rides, 3-night food festival with variety shows featuring Manila talents, My City My Culinary, Kapamilya Caravan, and Kapamilya Dance Showdown.

Robinsons’ Place Iloilo will be the venue of the Motor Show Competition, Newspaper Fashion, Search for Model Ati Warrior, the Miss Dinagyang Fantasy Make-up and Festival Costume presentations, and all of the Ms. Teen Dinagyang pre-pageant shows and coronation.

The two malls will provide space for the Dinagyang Information and Assistance Center during the festival weeks. SM City Iloilo will take care of the tribe costumes display.

Miss Dinagyang 2012 Finals will be at the Central Philippine University Gym on January 18, at 7:00 PM.

ABS-CBN will provide entertainment at the Iloilo Sports Complex while the crowd is waiting for the parade, and GMA is mounting a Kapuso Night on the evening of the Opening Salvo and the Awarding Ceremony.

The Church has prepared for the Opening Salvo for Senor Santo Niño on January 11, at 5:00 AM, to be followed by the re-installation of the Hermano and Hermana Mayor. There will be masses and novena. The coronation of Queen Juana and Nino Dinagyang will take place on January 18. The image of Santo Niño de Cebu will arrive on January 19 and the Fluvial Procession will be on January 20. There will be mass before the Kasadyahan contest and the Concelebrated mass before the Ati parade.

There will be medical and dental missions at Barangay Concepcion on January 8, and at Brgy. Calaparan on January 14. The Dinagyang Food Aid will be at Baluarte Elementary School on January 12, Arroyo Elementary School on January 17, and Jalandoni Elementary School in Lapuz on January 19.

The San Jose Church will also have its mass and feeding on January 14, the medical and dental services on January 15, and the Healing Mass and Lunch for the Sick on January 17. And the Thanksgiving Mass on January 23, at 5:00 PM.

Dinagyang is an economic driver for the development of skills and generation of jobs – there are activities for capacity building – enabling and empowering participants; providing opportunities for entrepreneurs. It shall cater the needs of many markets – motor vehicles enthusiasts, golfers, badminton players, swimmers, shooters, runners, and many more.

It continually improves the quality of tourism services. Dinagyang goes to the Iloilo Sports Complex. Kasadyahan becomes a regional contest of major festivals. Information and assistance centers are provided in malls and selected prime locations.

It is a benchmark for operative festival governance. Every committee is required to prepare a work-and-budget plan with liquidation requirement. Monitoring teams are organized to regulate operation and ensure compliance. It is a green and safe festival with environment friendly policies, anti-pollutants stand, and the “No Trace of Trash” project.

It is a festival with a heart for the underprivileged. The San Jose Church has organized feeding programs for children in the surrounding barangays in the Parish. There are medical and dental mission in different depressed villages in the City. It is expected that the outreach program may be extended to the indigenous Ati – the people from whom we appropriated the celebration of Dinagyang.
