Tagbac Elementary School: Transformative Learning through Organic Farming

A cheerful Mrs. Emma Caballero greets us at the gates of Tagbac Elementary School in Oton, Iloilo. She excitedly announced they got a funding from Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. for a new computer facility, on top of the new classrooms being built. So how can a small school from (an almost far-flung) barangay was able to receive such big grants from the government and private donors? Ma’am Emma tells her story…  When she became part of the school back in 2003, it was the most dilapidated in Oton. “ We have no electricity, we had poor water facilities and a non-functioning toilet. ” she recalls. “ But our worst problem was most of our students were slow readers - some even non readers. ” she laments. Esteemed Ilonggo artists Vic Fario and Vic Nabor continue with their art for a cause initiative through the Pag-Ulikid 2 exhibit at SM City Iloilo which opened last November 25 and will run until Dec. 9, 2022. In a post by Mr. Vic Nabor, he said that the youth is our future and each of them also deserves a better one. He added that, innate in every human soul is the desire to make the world a better place for them. Over 180 llonggo artists are featured at the Iloilo Arts Festival at Festive Walk Iloilo Iloilo City — Ilonggo artistry takes the centerstage in the Iloilo Arts Festival 2022, which is being hosted by Festive Walk Iloilo. The Iloilo City Government officially launched the City’s Grand Lighting Ceremony at SM City Iloilo South Point last November 25, 2022.  Together with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Iloilo, Mayor Jerry TreƱas distributed certificates of appreciation to all the benefactors of the Parol of Hope installed all over the city, as well as the Ilonggo families that beautified the plazas with Christmas centerpieces.
