The last Sunday of March 2014 is all set to host the 1st Iloilo Bike Festival. So what's in store for this new kind of activity in Iloilo City? It is foremost a gathering of bike enthusiasts not only from Iloilo but from all over the region and some parts of the country. The highlight would be a fun ride designed to take advantage of the existing bike lanes and at the same time lobby for the construction of more. Anchored on tourism, the 25km route will showcase the major attractions of Iloilo at the same time giving sports tourism a major boost.
I had the chance to have a little chit-chat with Rock Drilon, one of the proponents of the event and a cycling super enthusiast, during last Sunday's Calle Real Pedestrianization. Enjoying his cup of freshly brewed Guatemalan coffee in one of the stalls along JM Basa Street, he shared some of his insights of the festival. The current road development mainly in the Mandurriao area can be model to all upcoming projects in and around Iloilo. Bike lanes are now part of the 8-lane Diversion Road and Megaworld will also be provided these on their major thoroughfares. On top of that, the Iloilo Esplanade will, at certain times of the day, be opened for bikers. Also the newly built C1 road that connects two major arteries of Iloilo will be/have been provided with these special lanes.

The festival which is envisioned to be a yearly event (extending Iloilo's festival season to three months - from January to March) would also be widened in terms of involvment of LGUs. From the Iloilo City, it could extend to the MIDC municipalities like Oton, Pavia, Santa Barbara and Leganes, to name a few. And it could also cross the strait to Guimaras via RORO. Side activities will also help promote and sustain the event like its "integration" in some parts to the Calle Real Pedestrianization Sundays and the inclusion of arts and culture. There could be some body painted bike riders or those in cosplay and the likes. Perhaps, as what Ilonggos are fond of - maybe a food festival.
Who knows the Iloilo Bike Festival could be as big a Dinagyang and Paraw Regatta ...
