ILOMOCA's first Hulot Gallery offering for 2024: Comfortably Numb by Joe Geraldo

With the world ever-changing, one cannot just simply remain the same and do nothing.

This, among other things, is what multimedia artist Joe Geraldo holds true. His solo exhibition in the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art entitled Comfortably Numb surreally depicts the social realities in our country that we collectively share.

Demonstrated using pen and ink, each of the twenty-one (21) artworks present a journeyā€”more than enough to convey a lifetime of values and wisdom he has learned and lived through. Even the titles of his pieces could only speak for a part of the whole picture which is exactly how he wishes it to be.

Graphic creatures are intentionally placed in scenarios with mundane details to emphasize the symbolic representations of our common experiences. In the same way, these capture Geraldoā€™s enigmatic artistic process: out of this world but purposeful, out of control but brutally honest.

Inevitably his showstopper is on a 10 x 25 feet canvas that simultaneously draws you in and pushes you back. It reveals the interconnectedness of practically everything going on; from the good and the bad, right or wrong, big or small, comfortable and numb.

Geraldo boldly calls it The Fields of Lies and Hates as he has freely expressed here his thoughts on the issues of today. The spirit put into a single line, shape, form, and figure transcends varied interpretations and limitless imaginations whether you are focusing on one portion or taking it all in.

Thus, as suspenseful as it may seem, the journey does not end upon the last stroke of ink. The depth and intensity brought about by every unusual and unknown character highlight the value of how people use the time they are given.

The mystery of the surroundings is balanced with the motivation to keep going. The blank spaces speak just as loud as the individual marks on these papers, both illustrating parts of oneself being offered to the world. Because beyond the darkness and destruction, despite fear and pain, one must not be indifferent and not comfortably numb.

Roedil ā€œJoeā€ Geraldo is a renowned Filipino sculptor and multimedia artist who was admitted to the La Consolacion College-Bacolod's Fine Arts program in 1986. Throughout his career, Geraldo has received numerous accolades and awards for his exceptional artistic talent. He participated in the PLDT-DPC Telephone Directory Cover Visual Art National Competition, where he emerged as a regional winner for three consecutive years from 1991 to 1994.

He is also a member of several art associations, including the Art Association of Bacolod (AAB), Kasamahan ng mga Artisan Mulat ang Isip (KAMI), Art Association of Talisay (ATA), and Signus of Negros. Geraldo has showcased his artwork in numerous one-man shows, including exhibitions at La Salle Museum, Bacolod City, and Art in Formal Gallery, Manila.

Geraldoā€™s passion for art extends beyond his creations. He has actively participated in art conferences and workshops, including Tagay Bisaya, Kasi Kasi, and the Dumaguete Open Biennial Terracotta Art Festival. Through these engagements, Geraldo has not only honed his skills but also shared his knowledge and experiences with fellow artists.

In addition to his artistic endeavors, Geraldo has also had the opportunity to engage in artist residencies in Thailand, Singapore, and Germany. These experi- ences have allowed him to explore new artistic perspectives and collaborate with artists from different cultural backgrounds.

His artistic journey is a testament to his dedication, talent, and passion for the visual arts. His exceptional achievements, participation in exhibitions, and contributions to the art community have solidified his place as one of the prominent Filipino artists of his generation.
