This, among other things, is what multimedia artist Joe Geraldo holds true. His solo exhibition in the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art entitled Comfortably Numb surreally depicts the social realities in our country that we collectively share.
Demonstrated using pen and ink, each of the twenty-one (21) artworks present a journey—more than enough to convey a lifetime of values and wisdom he has learned and lived through. Even the titles of his pieces could only speak for a part of the whole picture which is exactly how he wishes it to be.
Graphic creatures are intentionally placed in scenarios with mundane details to emphasize the symbolic representations of our common experiences. In the same way, these capture Geraldo’s enigmatic artistic process: out of this world but purposeful, out of control but brutally honest.
Inevitably his showstopper is on a 10 x 25 feet canvas that simultaneously draws you in and pushes you back. It reveals the interconnectedness of practically everything going on; from the good and the bad, right or wrong, big or small, comfortable and numb.
Geraldo boldly calls it The Fields of Lies and Hates as he has freely expressed here his thoughts on the issues of today. The spirit put into a single line, shape, form, and figure transcends varied interpretations and limitless imaginations whether you are focusing on one portion or taking it all in.
Thus, as suspenseful as it may seem, the journey does not end upon the last stroke of ink. The depth and intensity brought about by every unusual and unknown character highlight the value of how people use the time they are given.
The mystery of the surroundings is balanced with the motivation to keep going. The blank spaces speak just as loud as the individual marks on these papers, both illustrating parts of oneself being offered to the world. Because beyond the darkness and destruction, despite fear and pain, one must not be indifferent and not comfortably numb.
