Centralian graduates Hector Jaime Ledesma (BSECE 2020) and Charles Marc Louise Novo (BSME 2020) along with two Agustinians, Ernest Florenz Quitalig and Lemuel Belasoro have successfully developed a "bag of hope."
This bag of hope refers to the first phase prototype of a Bag Valve Mask based ventilator which came in great timing and was developed in response to the lack of research-based projects, especially in light of the pandemic that is affecting the entire world.
The researchers noticed how the pandemic was affecting the country, specifically the health sector. As the number of cases rose up, so did the demand for cost-effective ventilators and yet our supply was and is currently lacking. The researchers then decided to do their part in the development of a more affordable ventilator.
The first phase prototype is subject for testing and development and will be submitted to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 6.
The project was funded by CPU with the approval of President Teodoro Robles, with technical support of Engr Jeriel Militar of PSME-PANAY; Dr Richard De Leon of ISAT-U Research Hub; and Dr. Dave Gelito, III, Dr. Ronnie Samoro, Dr. Anjuli Jaen, Mr. John Dignadice, III and Engr. Jacobs Lacson of WVSU-MC.
When asked what message they would like to give to the Filipino youth, the researchers had this to say:
"Aim to serve the people! The innovations born of our studies and education should be for the benefit of all.
Similarly, as necessary as studying our sciences is the study of our own national and local histories, and the struggle of the Filipino Poor and let it "trigger" our actions and guide our intentions.
Finally, be active members of society: never be silent for silence is complicity. Never stop challenging the status quo!"
